FIVE SEASONS #1 - 3.5 OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS

Although taking it on the chin this week (3-2 lose to North Ridge) GALLO'S guys came out swinging and played great tennis. With this loss, though, the "guys" are mathematically out of the playoffs with three losses.

OK, OK, someone once said youth has its advantages? I guess it is still true. Steve Lorton brought to our #1 Singles court accurate and punchy serves and a real Wimbledon ability to return the hardest of serves. He also was like a back board to about any ground stroke or volley his opponent challenged him with. But the one thing Steve could not overcome was his opponents' 19 years of age. Those 19 year old legs endured slightly better than Steve's 68 years...a 49 year difference. Set scores were 6-2,6-1. Hey everyone, let's all give Steve a round of support for his championship showing this week and wish him the best when he goes in next Monday to have a heart pacemaker implant. Yes, he will be joining the "Disabled List" starting Monday, June 26th, for the rest of the season. In spite of his appointment with surgery on Monday, Steve will be joining us this Sunday for practice. Now, that's a real team player. Good luck, Steve, with your surgery.

2nd Singles Norm Rados was doing fine until the 4.0 girls started playing in the court next to him and he was so distracted that he forgot about his razon d'etre and came out on the short end of 6-1,6-2 scores.

Ron Farnham and Jeff Roberts kept their concentration throughout the first set winning 6-3, but lost it in the second set losing 1-6. The tie breaker was a nail biter with the good guys winning it and their match. It was a great match to watch. Our second doubles team of Dennis Gresh and Mike Bornhorst lost a tight match 6-4,6-7,1-0. And, with only one service break in both the first and second sets, our third doubles team of Mike Voll and Mark Shepard had a proud showing in their loss of 6-4,6-4. Team score was 1-5.

Recognition is given to Mike, Dennis, Norm and Mark for licking their wounds after the match and enjoying a cold one.
